Active Projects & Preservation Initiatives
Silent Grounds Collective is engaged in a series of coordinated research, preservation, and public history projects across New Haven County and surrounding areas. Each initiative is designed to recover, protect, and interpret overlooked historical narratives while building a permanent archive and public-facing collection.

Our Projects

Midnight Mary Research Project

Historical Investigation – New Haven (1871–1873)
An archival and field investigation into Mary “Midnight Mary” Hart, focused on verifying records, documenting burial sites, and separating folklore from fact.
Outcome: A documented case study supporting future exhibits and publications.

West Cemetery Restoration Initiative

Meriden, CT – Preservation Project
A hands-on effort to restore and stabilize West Cemetery, addressing long-term neglect through stone repair, fencing, roadway improvements, and landscaping.
Outcome: A secure, restored cemetery with a sustainable maintenance plan.

New Haven Orphanage Archive Project

Artifact & Record Preservation
Collection and digitization of records, photographs, and personal items from historic orphanages.
Outcome: A permanent archive and future exhibit preserving these overlooked histories.

New Haven Carriage Company Project

Industrial History Initiative
Research and recovery of artifacts related to New Haven’s 19th-century carriage industry.
Outcome: An interpretive archive highlighting the region’s manufacturing legacy.

Victorian Funeral & Burial Education & Public Programming

Community Engagement
Public events including cemetery tours, lectures, and living history programs focused on 19th-century life and mourning traditions.
Outcome: Increased public awareness and engagement in preservation.

Cemetery Support & Regional Partnerships

Ongoing Preservation Work
Volunteer-driven support for cemeteries across New Haven County, including cleanup, documentation, and collaboration.
Outcome: A stronger regional preservation network.

Archive & Gallery Initiative

Development of a central archive and public gallery featuring digitized records, artifacts, and rotating exhibits.
