COLLECTION HISTORY
Connecticut began acquiring land at Sherwood Island in 1914. The state’s park history describes a 23-year struggle to assemble a public coastal park in the face of landowner opposition. Its status as the first state park reflects the first purchase, not immediate completion of the park. [CT053-S01]
The landscape now also holds Connecticut’s 9/11 Living Memorial. The state records that smoke from the World Trade Center could be seen from this shore. Dedicated in 2002, the memorial added a new layer of collective memory to a park created through an earlier fight over access. [CT053-S01]
The first state purchase in 1914 did not immediately create the fully assembled park. The state's account describes 23 years of acquisition and opposition, making access to the shore the central historical issue. A founding date alone hides that process. Maps and ownership records can help explain how many separate decisions lay between the first parcel and a usable public landscape. [CT053-S01]
The 9/11 Living Memorial, dedicated in 2002, added a later purpose to the shore. Its connection to the view toward New York belongs to a documented commemorative history, distinct from the early struggle to establish the park. Bringing these chapters together shows how public land can serve recreation, remembrance and education across generations. Dated images should identify whether they depict the beach, park facilities or memorial, rather than presenting every feature as part of the 1914 beginning. [CT053-S01]
