COLLECTION HISTORY
The Library of Congress identifies the origins of the Scovill Brass Works with Abel Porter & Company in 1802. Its historical engineering record places the works at 59 Mill Street, Waterbury. Early products included buttons, coins and whale-oil lamp components. [CT042-S01] [CT042-S02]
The Historic American Engineering Record photographs make the factory’s physical organization visible. Offices, production buildings and equipment spaces served different parts of the business. These records are especially valuable for studying industrial places after their operations or buildings have changed. [CT042-S01] [CT042-S02]
Buttons, coins and lamp components were small objects produced within a much larger working system. The Scovill record begins with Abel Porter & Company in 1802, but the engineering survey follows a complex that developed over time. Casting, shaping, storing and shipping material required different spaces. Reading those spaces together gives substance to the city's association with brass: the industry occupied rooms, consumed power and depended on repeated skilled operations. [CT042-S01] [CT042-S02]
The survey's building numbers let students connect a general view with individual production and power structures. A photograph of a boiler plant or turbine hall shows that making finished goods required an infrastructure of energy and maintenance. A roof-truss view asks another question: how was working space enclosed and supported? These are architectural clues rather than employment statistics. Annual accounts, product records and workers' recollections would be needed to explain the volume of production and the lives of the people using the buildings. [CT042-S01] [CT042-S02]
