Original sourceCOLLECTION HISTORY
The General Hospital Society of Connecticut was founded in 1826. Its first purpose-built hospital opened in 1833 with thirteen beds in a building designed by Ithiel Town. The official chronology gives the New Haven Hospital name in 1884 and formal Yale affiliation in 1917. Founding, a building opening and an affiliation are different events; photographs of later buildings should not be used as views of the original institution. [ED080-S01]
Grace Hospital developed separately. NHFPL’s building record dates its organization to 1887 and identifies the Burton Mallory house among its early premises. Postcards, ambulance images and photographs of nurses provide ways to investigate the institution’s public appearance and everyday support work. Their historical dates remain separate from digital-record and upload dates. A 1964 photograph of people modeling older nursing uniforms records a later retrospective display, not actual scenes from each represented period. [ED080-S02] [ED080-S03]
The report for 1899, presented in January 1900, describes ambulance calls, changes to kitchen and maternity facilities, and an underground connection between named wards. These details place care within a working infrastructure. The service connection is a specific documented hospital feature; it does not support a claim about a secret network beneath the city. The report’s figures describe institutional activity, while individual experiences require other evidence. [ED080-S04]
Grace affiliation in 1945 produced the Grace-New Haven Community Hospital name; Yale-New Haven Hospital followed in 1965. Photographs of fundraising in 1946, nursing facilities in 1953 and an aerial view in 1983 record different stages of growth. The collection follows this convergence without erasing the earlier separate institutions. It also leaves room for accounts of nurses, patients, support workers and neighboring residents alongside the official institutional history. [ED080-S01] [ED080-S03]
