COLLECTION HISTORY
The courthouse buildings around New Haven Green can easily become one story in memory, but they represent different institutions. At 121 Elm Street, the county courthouse was completed in 1914 to designs by Allen and Williams. Its restoration architect describes it as part of the city’s effort to give important public functions a grand architectural setting. [SGC100-S2]
The federal courthouse and post office followed another timetable. James Gamble Rogers designed a building constructed between 1913 and 1919. William Howard Taft spoke at the cornerstone ceremony in 1914, years before completion. Visitors entering its marble halls encountered a place built for both mail and justice; the post office remained until 1979. [SGC100-S1]
The federal building nearly disappeared during the urban-renewal era. Judges and preservation advocates helped save it, and a major restoration followed in the 1980s. It was renamed for former mayor Richard C. Lee in 1998. The gallery moves from the monumental exterior to the courtroom, showing the materials and proportions that made preservation consequential. A cornerstone, completion, restoration and renaming are four different milestones, not interchangeable opening dates. [SGC100-S1]
The federal building’s cornerstone was laid in 1914; construction continued through 1919. The county courthouse at 121 Elm Street is a different building.
