A wider view of this place

A public hospital opens, 1868

Connecticut Valley Hospital opened in 1868 to provide public treatment for people with mental illness. Its Middletown campus became part of a statewide system whose medical practices and public responsibilities changed over the following century. The institution’s history includes the lives of patients, their families and the people who cared for them. [1]

The cemetery, 1878–1957

The hospital cemetery opened in 1878. According to Godfrey Memorial Library, burials continued until 1957, when responsibility shifted to local town burial plots. Numbered stones identified graves without recording names in public view, a practice bound up with the stigma surrounding mental illness. The surviving markers are evidence of institutional policy and individual lives. [2]

Consolidation and commemoration, 1995–1999

Statewide restructuring in 1995 consolidated inpatient services at CVH while expanding community options. A separate effort addressed remembrance: beginning in May 1999, memorial services read the names of people buried in the cemetery. Godfrey’s published directory connects names with marker numbers, helping families and researchers move beyond an anonymous institutional landscape. [1] [2]

COLLECTION HISTORY

The people behind the place.

Connecticut’s legislature approved the hospital’s founding act on June 29, 1866. Its superintendent later recorded the opening to male patients on April 30, 1868. The 1888 report illustrates a growing institution through separate Main, Middle and South Hospital views, while its accounts document the staff and agriculture required to operate it. [CV-011]

The campus later became known as Connecticut Valley Hospital. Today’s official overview places its history within changing systems of treatment: inpatient services were consolidated at CVH during the 1995 statewide restructuring; Cedarcrest services consolidated with CVH in 2010; and Whiting Forensic Hospital separated on May 1, 2018. The exact statutory date of the CVH name change has not been verified in this research. [CV-012]

The official reports describe a large institution sustained by buildings, staff, workshops and a farm. Their tables preserve the administrators’ categories and priorities. Individual experiences require additional evidence; a total in an annual report cannot identify a person or substitute for a death certificate. [CV-010]

The 1866 act and 1868 first admissions separate legislative creation from opening. Later annual reports show that a large hospital depended on far more than wards: staff, farming, workshops and service buildings supported its daily operation. The administrators’ tables and building illustrations illuminate how they organized and represented that work. They do not speak equally for every patient. Later statewide consolidations and the separation of Whiting Forensic Hospital belong to a changing system of services rather than the original founding moment. A careful history follows those administrative changes while protecting the distinction between an institution’s totals and the identity or experience of a particular person.
