Two schools, two towns and one evolving campus: the buildings and daily spaces of Choate Rosemary Hall.

Founding dates describe the separate schools. The present school’s history distinguishes their reunion from the formal 1974 merger.

Choate's campus
COLLECTION HISTORY
The story begins with two schools. Mary Atwater Choate founded Rosemary Hall for girls in 1890. Six years later, Judge William G. Choate established a boys’ school on the family’s Wallingford property. Sharing roots did not mean sharing the same later path: Rosemary Hall moved to Greenwich in 1900, while Choate developed in Wallingford. [SGC91-S1]
Their separation lasted for decades. Rosemary Hall eventually returned to Wallingford, and the official school history dates the formal merger to 1974. The two founding dates therefore belong together at the top of this collection. Giving the combined school only one opening date would erase part of its history. [SGC91-S1]
The photographs offer a walk through the resulting campus: houses, dormitories, a library, chapel, dining room and spaces for the arts and sciences. They are dated architectural views, not a claim that every building existed when either school opened. A familiar campus is built from many generations of construction, and the gallery lets visitors see those layers in the places where students lived, gathered and studied. [SGC91-S1]
Founding dates describe the separate schools. The present school’s history distinguishes their reunion from the formal 1974 merger.
