Taken on 24 August 1968

Waterbury's predecessor depot, postcard mailed in 1909
circa 1909; postmark 1909
Waterbury predecessor railroad depot with modest tower. This postcard shows the older Waterbury depot that was replaced by the larger Union Station in 1909. It does not depict the later clock-tower building.
Waterbury’s Union Station opened in 1909. Designed by McKim, Mead & White, its prominent clock tower made the railroad a defining presence in the cityscape. The building later became associated with the offices of the Republican-American newspaper. [CT061-S01]
The photographs in this collection show New Haven Railroad equipment beside the station in August 1968. They document a specific period in rail service, while the later reuse of the station building is a separate chapter. This collection distinguishes the historic structure from active passenger operations nearby. [CT061-S01]
The 1909 station's clock tower made rail travel visible far beyond the platforms. McKim, Mead & White's building joined a practical transport role with an unmistakable civic presence. Its later association with the Republican-American adds another use to the same landmark, without making the building's entire history a newspaper history. [CT061-S01]
The August 1968 railway photographs record a specific relationship between equipment, tracks and station. They are useful for comparing the building with the working railway around it. Later reuse of the structure and passenger operations nearby must be dated separately. A preserved facade does not prove that travelers continued using every former room. [CT061-S01]
