Collection history

The paired images identify the former Stevenson passenger station in the Stevenson section of Monroe. The historical photographic postcard records the station building, while the 2012 photograph identifies stone foundation rubble beside the former station location. [CT063-S01] [CT063-S02]

The later photographer places the site on the Housatonic Railroad’s Derby Extension and records continued freight use at the time. The disappearance of a passenger station therefore does not establish abandonment of the railway. Precise opening and removal dates remain research gaps in this edition. [CT063-S01] [CT063-S02]

The historical postcard and 2012 foundation photograph tell different parts of the Stevenson story. One presents a recognizable passenger building; the other directs attention to rubble and location. Their comparison can recover a place that is no longer obvious, but it cannot supply the building's exact opening or removal date. Those remain questions for timetables, maps and company records. [CT063-S01] [CT063-S02]

The later photographer's account describes freight use at the time, an important qualification to the idea of an abandoned station. A passenger facility can disappear while trains still use the line. The distinction shifts the story from simple loss to a change in railway functions. The archive retains the date of that observation rather than presenting it as a current operating statement, and keeps Stevenson in Monroe geographically distinct from similarly named stations elsewhere.
