STANDING COMMITTEE.
At the institution of this Cliurcli, the office of Rulincr Ehier was
j
considered a stated office, having duties distinct from those devolv-
i
ing on the pastor and teacher.
It was the chief work of the Ruling
j
Elder, with the advice and aid of the other overseers of the Church,
I
to
prepare
all
niattors
of business
for
the hearing and action
of
j
the brotherhood.
In the declensions and
chanf::cs which
followed
:
the death of the
first fathers of New England, this office was grad-
ually disused.
In this Church, Robert Newman seems to have been ruling elder
in
1()44, and for some time alter wards.
No person appears to have
sustained the office after the removal of Mr. Davpuport.

that any association of believers

You believe,
that there

This flourishin«j and popuhir Societv
has hccoine so well known,
and
its various interests are nou'so well understood and appreciated,
that little besides a synopsis of the last Report need be appended.
Fourteen boxes of clothinn- and hous(3iiold jirticU^s have been dis-
tributed arnonif eleven Home Missionary families.
Including; cash
donations which have accompanied these,
the estimated value thus
disbursed has amounted to s:]! MJl.liO.
Add to this, three Commun-

other valuable books, and the donations of this Society for the past
year may be stated at .^4r)00,
while the value of " o;oods and

they commenced the
year.

The
largest attend-

In April, Deacon Whittlesey, who, for seven years, had earnestly
and fiithfully served the Sciiool as
its Superintendant, resigned his
office into the hands of Mr. J. Henry Root.
During the
year,
Mrs. Edward

faithful
Teacher,
and A. Frank Barnes, a nicuiber of Dr. Bradley's class, were called
from faithful testimony for Christ on earth, to the perfected service
of His saved ones in heaven.
The rnenibership of the School at the present time, (Jan.

APPENDIX
E.
The Pastoh's Aid Society,
Its OniGIN AND UliGANIZATION.
At the annual meetincf of the First Church of New Haven, Jan.
1),
1870, Mr.
H.
C. Kingsley ollered some remarks in connection
with the usual reports made hy various committees, particularly the
report on the state of relin^ion in the church.
In referring to these reports as indicatinnr a gratifying degree of
prosperity, he remarked,
in substance, that
it
is certainly pleasant
to know that the church
is steadily increasing in numbers and that
its contributions
for benevolent purposes are large.
At the same
time,
it
is important we should
be considerate of the danger of
over-estimating these outward signs of prosperity.
In the church,
numbers
are
not strength, money
is
not power.
The prosperity
that
is
indicated
only by tokens
that are material and external,
is
not such
as
Christ's church
needs.
To be what He designed
it
should
be, an unspeakable
blessing
in
the
world,
it must have a
strong inner
life,
a working spiritual life;
a life that springs from
personal devotion
; from an individual, sincere, loving consecration
to Christ and His service
;
not living for itself alone, but laboring
also for otfiers.
A church
is truly prosperous only in proportion as
it is pervaded by this spirit.
Such a spirit it is eminently important
to stimulate and develope.
To aid
in doing
this. Rev. Dr. Patton
moved that a committee be appointed
to consider what systematic
plan of benevolence might be devised which should enlist the activ-
ities of the church
in
personal
christian
labor.
This motion was
adopted.
A
committee
was
appointed
consisting
of Mr.
H.
C.
Kingsley, Rev. VVm. Patton, D.I).,
Prof. C. S. Lyman, Mr.
Alfred
Walker, and Dr. L. J. Sanford.

46
At a church ineetintr held Jan.
»}(), the clKiirnian of the Coniinit-
tee, Mr. PL C. Kingsley, made the followinij
Report.
The appointment by
the church
of
a c;.>mmittee
to
consider
and
report in what ways
tlio
usefulness of the church may
be
increased,
assumes that the church reco^aiizes the duty and believes in the
[prac-
ticability of
increa.suig' its usefulness.
Any remarks on
these
points
may
therefore seem unnecessary,
bur.
the committee
have
thou<^ht
that they might, not inappropriately, say a few words
in
relatiun
to
them by way of adding strength to the convictions of
all.
The New Testament idea of a Christian church,
is of a body of be-
lievers united by the bond of a common
faith
in
Christ
for
nuitual
edification and for active
labor
in
his
cause.
As
the
love of
( 'hrist
for men brought him to a life
of self sacrifice
in our
world, so
it
is
expected of Christians that their love to
their
risen
Savior
will
lead
them
to active and earnest endeavors after those
for whom he
died.
Arguments, exhortations, invitations, encouragements to sucli work are
with great frequency and urgency addressed by the
Apostles
in
their
epistles to the churches.
No countenance is given to the idea
that a
Christian can be inactive or passive, or that the minister
of a church
is to do the whole work of the church.
The minister is indeed
under
Christ to be the head, the director,
tlie leader, the
guide, the teacher,
the counselor, but the directions of the New Testament
are
full and
explicit in demanding of all Christians active
service.
The
Christian
who has obtained a hope and
then
resigns
himself to
a
life
of ease
and repose, like the traveler, who buys his ticket and seots himself in
the railway car without thought
or care
for
the
journey, trustiuj-
to
the conductor for his safe arrival at his
destination,
is
not recognized
by the New Testament writers.
The Christian wlio
is satisfied when
his intellect is convinced by the logical argument, or when his im.igin-
ation is delighted and his feelings excited or softened by tlie eloquence
of some favorite preacher, but
wlio
is not moved by any or
all
the-e
to some active elTort and exercise
ol" the powers
within
him, wili find
at length his appetite cloyed
with
rich
food, his
strength
reduced to
weakness and
his
Christian
life almost
extinct.
Christian
lal.)or
is
essential to spiritual digestion.
On these points there
is no diffnence
of opinion among the members of this church.
We
are members
of
the body of Christ, eaoh
having
a
capacity
for some
function
;
each

one adapted by natural
crifts or by
the

for some
active C'hristian duty.
Let ua be careful, however, each one
to stand
in his lot and perform the duty

longs to him, or in some other way mistakintr liis appointed work.
Tliis ctiurch is indeed a city set on a
hill
;
its hght cannot
be
liid.
Its example is looked to, its inlluence is
felt
throuirliout New Haven
and in other coinmunitie.s.
Its liistory
for nearly
two centuries
:ind
a half,
is illustrated by a long line of
faithi'ul
nunister.s of
(
Iirist and
of a goodly company
of godly men and women, who
have
in
tlieir
day and generation
done
good
service
for
their Lord and
Master.
With all
tlie prestige of the past, an<l all that lias been done by those
who have gone before, to encourage
us, we
stand by God's
grace
at
the present time to consider our duties and responsibilities.
We may
truthful!}' say that there
is
no church
of our
order
in New Haven
which has now greater capacity for usefulness
in the cause of Christ
than this church, and the amount of work
actually accomplished
is
not unworthy of remembrance.
The committee have been encouraLied.
and think that the church may well be encouraged, in seeking
to
ex-
tend their usefulness in old and new channels, by recalling tiie success
which
is attending the
labors
of the
ladies of the Home
Mi.-sionary
Society;
the prosperous condition of our Sabbath
Sehnol. now more
prosperous than for many
years,
and
the
not few
individuals who
have devoted time and labor to Mission Sabbath Schools and
to many
other works of mercy and charity.
But is the church
satisfied
with
these labors?
Shall we stop here ?
No one
sup[)ose3
the capability
of the church to be exhausted by what is now done.
It
is small, very
J<mall, in comparison with what the church can and
tlierefnre ought
to do.
The committee have reason to believe that many
nienibcrs of
the church would be glad
to
be more
actively empl(;yed,
if the
w.iy
was opened:
that there are many who do not
feel satistied
that
they
are doing their whole duty towards their fellow members in the churchy
or to those who are without.
They recognize the principle, that where
much is given much also will be required.
In the first place, then, the usefulness of the church may be increased
'^y a njore intimate acquaintance among
its
members.
It can hardly
expected that in
so large
a
church as
ours,
composed
of persons
\vho are necessarily engaged durmg the great(^r part (jf the time in the
''dinary cares and widely varying work of
liie, an acquaintance

would

to
mutual

The
Sabb.itli
School
is
)
another
instrument of
usofulucs.i
to
the
church, whicli may

creased.
We have said that
it
is now more prosperous than for many
j
years, and so
it
is.
A. baud
of faithful
and
earnest
te-ichers
have
drawn to them nearly two hundred scholars, but
the time
is
remera-
;
bered when twice that uuinbcr were enrolled on the list of the
sciiool.
It might be so now.
The material is not wanting.
Large numbers of
1
young persons are more or less ro:zular attendants on our S ibbath ser-
vices, over whom the church ou^ht to a least attempt to
exert
a more
decided influence.
These form a class of persons
who, by
their pre-
sence with us on the Sabbath, in a manner ask us for our active sym-
pathy
and
friendly
services,
which we
cannot
properly
withhold.
The formation
of additional
Bible
classes from among these
persons,
and from those more
especially
of our own
church, who no
lon^rer
call themselves children, would be a very efficient means of doing good.
If we look
outside of
tlie church we find a very
large numbe r
of
the whole adult population of New Haven, who have no regular place
of worship, while of more
tmnslent persons, the sailors are an
inter-
esting and much neglected class.
There must
be, there
are ways
of
,
reaching
these.
By
the opening of new
places
of worship, by
the
!
establishment of Sabbath Sciiv>ois for neglected children
; by
the
dis-
•
tribution of tracts and religious i»ooks
; by
bible
reading;
by holding
;
prayer meetings in neighborhoods whore
little

;
exerted,
it is believed much
u'ood may
be
accomplished
and
tliai
in
!
some or all
of these ways
this church ought
to
let
its
light shine.
\
Perhaps
it
is not too mucli to say that
this church ought
of itself to
j
support a fity niissionary to labor among the destitute of our city. The-e
j
modes of church work are
not new.
Labor
of
tlie
kind
which
has
I
been indicated
is l.irgcly and systematically prosecuted in
other cities
I
and large towns.
It has not lieen entirely unknown or untried among
ourselves.
A single church in the city of New York, through
an
or-
ganization
formed
in
the
church, supports
live
missionary
chapels,
six Sunday
Schools
attended by
1500
scholars, a
dispensary which
affords medical aid to the desdtuto who require
it, six industrial schools*
a school for crippled children ami a Dorcas Society, at an
annual
cost

it is found to be
a
very
important aid in the work of home evangelization.
One
of the
epis-
copal churches of this city has within itself an oriranization
for
some
of these purposes, chartered by the legislature, which
has now been
in operation eigliteen
years, with
very
satisfactory
results.
These
are given as instances and exatuples
of what
other
churches accom-
plish and seek to accomplish by union of
effort.
The cocumittee would especially call the attention of the church
to
the importance of the work at Xewhallville.
The small chapel which
was erected there some time since is comfortably tilled on the Saljbath,
and the Sabbath School
is moderately well attended.
The
exi.'c rience
of about three months work in the Summer and early Autunm of
last
year showed
that
the
field
is
a
promising
one. that
the systematic
nsiting of the people of the neighborhood would much increase
their
interest in the church and in the school.
There
is now quite a
settle-
ment
there, and
the number
of inhabitants
is
increasing.
As some
naanufictories are in successful operation and others are contemplated^
it seems to the committee that that part
of the
city must soon grow
rapidly and largely, and that this mis-ion enterprize promises a favor-
ible result.
We are already m possession of the ground, and tlie com-
3iittee earnestly
reconmiend that
the churcli
should take
this
enter-
prize under irs care,
in the hope and expectation that
it will soon grow

The
First Church of Christ
in New Haven
is coeval with the
town.
On the 15th of April (Old Style)
1(3:^8,
the
first
settlers
of
the town, having just landed
at
the
place which they hnd chosen
tor their home, assembled for public worshi}) under the guidance of
their chosen minister; ami from
that
time
onward, they continued
to worship God as a Christian assembly.
For about fourteen months, the ecclesiastical and
civil
attuirs of
the community were
conducted
under
a
provisional
arrangement
or "plantation covenant."
On
the
4th of June (O.

\i\:]\K after
•iiuch
deliberation and
prayer concernino-

permanent organization should
be
instituted,
all
the tVee
plant-
*>rs" agreed
in the choice of twelve men who
v. ere
to
select from
iimong themselves seven
; and
to those seven was committed
the
'rust of instituting,
in conformity with the word
of God,
first the
' oclesiastical
order,
and
afterwards
the
civil
or^ranization
an(i
-overnment of their commonwealth.
Tlieophilus Haton,John Da-
onport, Robert Newman, Matthew Gilbert, Thomas Fu;ji|l. John
f'underson, and
Jereminh
Dixon,
having
been
sele<ned
for
that
'rust, were the original members of the Church.
It has been received by tradition, though no authentic record of
•'^•e date
remains,
that the organization of the Church
was com-
•oted on the 21st of August
((). S.
)
in the same year.
Dr. Cotton
Mather, in his Magnalia (published
1700), says of this Church and
.''»e First Church
in Milford, that they were both gathered at New
^J^ven, and
were "gathered in two days, one
following upon the
dier, and with this one singular circumstance, that a mijxhty barn

Hie records of the Milford Church say, "The Church of Christ at
Uilford was
first gathered at New Haven upon August '^2, UW."
