A selected primary-image and source collection. Factory views are historical commercial renderings, and engraved portraits are identified as illustrations. Historical factory photographs are linked as research leads where reuse remains unverified. The 1886 and 1891 dates come from later printed directories; original corporate filings have not been acquired. The reported 1924 closing date remains a secondary-source lead.
The story in pictures
Fine Light Carriages advertisement, 1887
1887
An illustrated advertisement for the New Haven Carriage Co., makers of fine light carriages at 5–19 Franklin Street, corner of Collis Street. The illustration and wording belong to this company; neighboring advertisements in the source spread are for other carriage makers.
The 1887 directory records incorporation in November 1886, capital of $10,000, George F. Holcomb as president, H. S. Holcomb as treasurer, and George E. Spare as secretary. Its address is 5–19 Franklin Street.
The 1894 business directory lists the company at Water and Franklin streets, records incorporation in October 1891 and capital of $200,000, and names George F. Holcomb, H. S. Holcomb, and William H. Atwood as officers. This is a later corporate stage than the 1886 incorporation.
New Haven Carriage Co. advertised opera busses, victorias, breaks, carts, broughams, cabriolets, wagonettes, gigs, and family carriages in the 1903 American carriage directory.
Spare's patent shows a buckboard with a movable seat that could slide beneath the fixed seat, linking New Haven Carriage Company to practical design inventions.
The company’s own 1887 advertisement offers fine light carriages at 5–19 Franklin Street, corner Collis. The same year’s directory records incorporation in November 1886 with $10,000 capital and George F. Holcomb as president. These two sources connect the exact company name with products, officers and a street address. [NCC-002]
A later corporate stage appears in the 1894 directory: incorporation in October 1891, $200,000 capital and an address at Water and Franklin streets. It names George F. Holcomb as president and treasurer, H. S. Holcomb as vice president and William H. Atwood as secretary. Both incorporation entries are retained; the original filings are needed to explain the legal transition. [NCC-003]
By 1903, the American carriage directory presents the business as a wholesale maker of light and heavy vehicles. Its advertisement lists carriage categories rather than relying on one decorative illustration. Compare the 1887 and 1903 ads for changes in the company’s address, product description and intended trade audience. [NCC-004]
New Haven Museum’s MSS 245 finding aid lists undated company booklets of carriage designs and models in Box 2. Those cataloged booklets are a promising next acquisition, but their scans are not included here. A secondary history reports a July 14, 1924 closure announcement; that terminal date awaits a contemporary notice or business record. [NCC-006]
Franklin Street, Collis Street and the later Water-and-Franklin address supply a geographical thread through the company’s advertisements and directory entries. Products and officers provide another. The 1886 and 1891 incorporation statements should remain separately dated until the original filings explain their relationship. That restraint makes the collection more useful: researchers can test a transition instead of inheriting an oversimplified founding date. The change from an early fine-light-carriage advertisement to a broader wholesale offering in 1903 also suggests questions about customers and production. Surviving design-booklet references could connect those claims to individual models. Until their pages are inspected, the finding aid identifies where evidence survives without pretending that the designs have already been acquired. [NCC-002][NCC-003][NCC-004]

A closer look at the surviving record
The right company, pictured
This illustrated advertisement names New Haven Carriage Co. and its Franklin Street location. Neighboring advertisements in the original directory belong to other makers. The selected crop keeps this company’s illustration and wording together.
The later entry records greater capital and a Water/Franklin address. It belongs beside the earlier 1886 entry, not in place of it. The two records offer a precise starting point for retrieving the company’s incorporation and property files.
The trade advertisement lists multiple carriage categories and identifies a wholesale manufacturer. Its text lets a researcher study the company’s advertised range, even though a verified factory photograph has not yet been recovered.
Spare's patent shows a buckboard with a movable seat that could slide beneath the fixed seat, linking New Haven Carriage Company to practical design inventions.
