Mary E. Hart — monument inscription
The inscription records birth on December 16, 1824 and death at midnight on October 15, 1872, following a collapse at noon. These dates give age 47, not 48. The inscription does not state a medical diagnosis or prove premature burial.
Historical inscription transcribed as published; lineation and punctuation should be checked against a new complete photograph. Its biblical phrase echoes Job 34:20. No current marker photograph is reproduced.

Yale obituary — James Porter Hart, p. 261
The obituary reports James Porter Hart’s death on January 10, 1877, aged 59, and a February 11, 1846 marriage to Mary E. Pierpont of New Haven. It says she survived him with one son.
Public-domain historical publication. Retain author, publication and digitizing repository credits. The survival statement conflicts with identifying this wife as Mary who died in 1872. The 1873 Fidelia marriage notice supplies another lead, not a conclusive resolution. The obituary date and age also differ from Evergreen’s James entry.
Obituary record for graduates deceased during the academical year ending June 1877, in the bound volume 1870–1880. Yale University. Internet Archive contributor: Robarts — University of Toronto. The item copyright-evidence statement dates the bound volume 1880.
1840.
James Porter Hart, second son of Dr. John A. Hart, and grandson of Dr. John Hart (Y. C. 1776), both of Farmington, Conn., was born in Farmington, July 27, 1817. His mother was Joanna, daughter of Samuel Porter, of Berlin, Conn.
He spent the three years after graduation in the Yale Divinity School, and afterwards resided in New Haven, where he died Jan. 10, 1877, aged 59 years.
He was interested in the science of phonography, and published several tracts on that subject. At an earlier period he took a warm interest in the settlement of fugitive slaves in Canada.
He was married, Feb. 11, 1846, to Mary E. Pierpont, of New Haven, who survives him, with one son.
