The story in pictures
English Station in the neighborhood streetscape
2011
The power station rises beyond a New Haven intersection. The street-level view shows how the industrial building remained part of the surrounding neighborhood after generation ended.
Carol M. Highsmith’s view places the former power plant beside the Mill River. The brick mass and river setting survive long after its generating units stopped.
An elevated view shows English Station occupying Ball Island between the river channels. The operator dates generation to 1929–1992; this photograph records the surviving structure decades later.
A wider Highsmith photograph places the former power plant within the tidal river landscape. Compare the water, banks and nearby structures with the closer bridge view.
Before the power station, Ball Island was a low piece of tidal land in the Mill River. The local trail history traces its name to Allen Ball and describes a landscape once used for harvesting grass, later occupied by lumber businesses. Its position between river channels made it part of the working harbor landscape long before the tall brick walls arrived. The island in this collection is the New Haven site, not Ball & Socket Manufacturing in Cheshire. [SGC88-S2]
Electricity remade both the skyline and the ground beneath it. Filling and bulkheads enlarged the island to carry generating buildings. United Illuminating records the first English Station units entering service in 1929, with further expansion through 1952. Boilers originally burned coal and were converted to oil in the late 1950s. Inside, heat and machinery became electrical power for the surrounding communities. The company dates the end of operation to 1992. [SGC88-S1]
The building was designed to be seen as well as to work. Its high boiler room, turbine hall and office wing combined industrial structure with pointed arches and elaborate brickwork. Seen from the bridges, the surviving mass rises above the water like a monumental civic building. Later photographs document that architecture after generation stopped; they are not pictures of the station operating in the 1920s. The operator’s environmental records explain why the site’s later history also involves investigation and remediation. [SGC88-S3]
